The growth of the EV market in the UK has been quite promising. With 2020 seeing the growth of close to 190% in EV ownership, the number of EVs in the streets of the UK has surpassed 400 thousand. With the 2030 ban on the sale of diesel and petrol by the UK, the surge in EVs seems to be promising. With more than 40% of the car models available as plug-ins, the demand for the charging point is on the rise too.

There are multiple reasons for the rise of EVs in the UK. With government aid being one of the most important catalysts, we expect EVs to occupy close to 20% of the market on UK roads.

Let us find out some of the key reasons for the growth of EVs in the UK:

  • Government’s efforts to achieve zero net emission: The UK government plans to achieve zero net emissions by 2050. With transportation being heavily dependent on fossil fuels, it accounts for 27% of the greenhouse emissions. With half of the youth looking to adapt to EVs in the coming decade, expect a paradigm shift in vehicle choices.
  • Schemes by the UK government: The UK government, in an effort to promote the purchase of EVs, has launched multiple schemes. One such scheme is the discount that the UK government offers if the purchase of the EV is under £32,000. Moreover, the government grants the PICG, which gets eventually deducted from the showroom price.
  • Boost of the charging point infrastructure in the UK: As of 2022, the sale of EVs in the UK is close to 800,000, with close to 40% being PHEV types. This has stimulated the growth of public charging points by over 80% during 2019-21. Moreover, the recent announcement by the UK government to increase EV charging points to 30,000 public charging stations by 2030, has come as breaking news for EV enthusiasts.

Current scenario of the EV charging points

The current scenario in terms of the EV charging points looks very grim. As of February 2022, with more than 400 thousand EVs on the road, only 29,600 charging points cater to them. The 600% jump in the sales of the EVs has to meet a paltry 82% growth in EVs across the UK. The charging points are not equally distributed across the UK. Major cities and busy routes have been the focal point for the EV chargers.

The UK’s governments plan to provide 30,000 public charging stations

To meet the growing demand, the UK government has set a target to launch 30,000 public charging points by 2030. As per the announcement, the Department of Transport would inject an additional 450 mn euros to meet this goal. This has come after the heavy criticism that the UK government has received. On-street chargers and charger hubs – are two primary focus areas for the time being.

Bottom line:

This is probably the best time to switch over the EVs in the UK. With the gap insurance hedging against any unforeseen losses and the government’s impetus to this change, don’t think twice before switching to EVs.
